I actually think organic free range eggs have more calcium because the shells are much harder, whereas factory farm egg shells break very easily with the slightest pressure. By why bother with that? Tums have artificial dye in them and other garbage… when organic egg shells are just pure calcium. In fact, I know people who use tums to get their calcium by breaking it in half. If the calcium in eggs is so neutralizing to stomach acid then we would have the same problem taken any mineral supplement, or taking bone broths or consuming dairy. ![]() People usually take several to accomplish this. Tums have 1000mg calcium carbonate PER TABLET which is a ridiculously high amount and is meant to suppress stomach acid. You need 1/3 tsp of eggshell twice a day to get your daily calcium. Tums are used to treat a symptom, which is heart burn, and this is accomplished through the dose. Taking eggshell calcium is not equivalent to taking tums because normally you take tums for heartburn which is after or before a meal in order to neutralize acid, whereas eggshell would be taken with the food. If there are any chunks, absorption will go way down due to lack of surface area for stomach acid to act upon. The other thing is that the egg shells must be finely powdered. ![]() The body won’t absorb minerals from food if stomach acid can’t first cleave them from the food. The same is true of all mineral supplements: zinc, magnesium, calcium, etc. If you take egg shell on an empty stomach then it will just pass right through with not enough stomach acid interaction.
